How to Keep from Getting Toasted

Skim through any portion of Dragons, History Professors, and Other Hazards of College Life that you have not yet read, and read more carefully the last two chapters.   Of the advice given in these chapters, does anything surprise you? Of the familiar principles, what seems to you to be particularly worth reinforcing?

  1. I think that standing your ground and facing your fears is the best advice given in the book. It is often easier to run away than it is to confront a problem. But sometime we need to make a choice between what is right, and what is easy.

  2. Nothing really surprised me... I think that it is important to keep reinforcing the fact that only 40% of students finish college to get their degree. Everyone needs to be true to themselves, and sometimes it is hard giving up certain things, but in the end, we need to do the right thing for us... whatever we believe in.

  3. I think it is a little surprising that so many people would give up on a degree that would open so many doors for them and basically throw away all that money they spent on college by dropping out because they decide it is too hard or can't handle it. If they drop out more do to a bad financial situation or family issues then I suppose it is easier to understand, but if you just leave because you feel like you can't do it rather than try than you aren't trying all that hard to succeed.

  4. When I finished the Dragon handbook I wasn't too surprised by much except the fact that students and Americans have so many opportunities to be successful but they don't take advantage of them. Reasons like "it's too hard" or " I don't feel like it."Also students that do start college or take the challenge of pursuing college drop out at a rate that is higher then ever. In order to be successful in college or life in general, you must apply/believe in yourself and come ready to be better every day.
