How to find what you are not looking for

Please read Chapters I and II of Dragons, History Professors, and Other Hazards of College Life. There's a lot of advice in these two chapters, much that you've heard before, plus (perhaps) a few things you hadn't. What (if anything) in these chapters surprises you? Of the familiar advice, what seems worth reinforcing? Is there anything you would have added to the chapter if you were giving college success advice?

  1. Nothing in either of the chapters surprises me. I found it an interesting read. Of the familiar advice, I do find that the information on how alcohol and drug use can ruin your life could be worth reinforcing. Many of us college students have heard the speeches before about why we shouldn't get involved in such things, but since some of these students haven't experienced their effects first had, they choose to ignore the warnings and get involved anyway. The whole "get out there and make friends" thing isn't quite as easy as others make it sound. Sure, it's good advice to try and follow, but not everybody out there is friendly or into the same weird stuff that you're into. So far, college has been kind of rough. It is now my fourth day and I have finally found somebody who seemed interested in what I had to say and cared enough to say "goodbye" when going her own way. Maybe you should include something in there for the socially awkward late bloomers that will give them hope for friendship.

  2. The thing that surprised me was the students use to use a pity wall to tell their story. Jeff Hyke

  3. I was very interested in the experiences that you had in your own college life and your expeditions as a teacher. A lot of these things in the reading did not really surprise me either, we live in a world where we will be exposed to different things as we get older. The challenge is what is considered "too far" or not.

  4. I think that a professor is encouraging us to be more involved struck me to be a little odd since social experiences can take away from study times.

  5. There were not that many surprises in the reading for me. I think the no drinking no partying needs to be reinforced and I feel the reading covered everything. It covered everything from studying to what not to do

  6. I thought that it was a pretty straight forward read. It covered subjects that everyone "should" know before going to college, but it was an interesting read none the less.

  7. I think something that needs reinforcing is the social aspect of college. In my opinion, being social is a hug part of life, and making connections with the right people can help a person go far in life. Being social can also take away from the stress of college by getting your mind off of the things that are bothering you.

  8. Nothing in the reading really surprised me since I had teachers and adults saying things like get involved and don't drink or do drugs all the time. The one thing I found interesting was the pity wall.

  9. Nothing really surprised me either. Society has changed and when kids get into college, there is peer pressure and freedom. People make mistakes, but then they learn from them. It's all about what you want to accomplish in life and how serious you take getting a degree.

  10. I have to agree that what I read here is nothing new to me. All the stuff about drinking and drugs has been run through me time and time again by my parents. As for the other stuff in the chapter a good amount of it should common knowledge for most people.

  12. Because my parents worry about me a lot, i didn't hear anything i didn't already know. With this being said, I believe it is good for students to be social and have fun because you only get to go to college once. Being social helps you meet new people and could give you opportunities later in life. If I had to add something it would be to make sure everything you do is in moderation, partying is okay if you are smart about it.
